Carnegie Hall musical director Steven Reineke led the New York Pops in a frisky concert to celebrate composer Stephen Sondheim’s 80th birthday by playing some of his greatest songs to a very happy and sold out crowd. The amazing tribute to Sondheim, one of the greatest composers and lyricists in American history, included Broadway favorites Kate Baldwin, Aaron Lazar, Christiane Noll, Alexander Gemignani, and Renee Rakelle and Paul Betz, who joined the orchestra along with the Essential Voices USA for Act 1 finale’s “A Weekend in the Country.” Sondheim, who has won every possible award including multiple Tony’s, Grammys, an Oscar and a Pulitzer, is a New York native whose most famous scores include ‘A Funny Thing Happened in the Way to the Forum,’ ‘A Little Night Music,’ ‘Sweeney Todd,’ as well as the lyrics for ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Gypsy.’ What a resume.      www.carnegiehall.org
