The outrageous, free-spirited and self-taught musician Kayvon Zand, club kid turned provocative performing artist has teamed up with nightlife staple Susanne Bartsch to throw a weekly Tuesday night party at Andre Balaz’ exclusive Top of the Standard ‘Le Bain’ in the Meatpacking District’s hip Standard Hotel. You may remember Zand, who caused a ruckus last year when his expected expressive and rock-shock valued show got Highline Ballroom in a tizzy and told him never again. Anyway, the New York Post and others like Michael Musto wrote about it and just like other provoking artists before him who love to poke us, so does Kayvon and he will again. Said Zand, “My live show is rated R it’s not for children.” After just signing with record maker Gary Salzman of Big Management responsible for making some of the best dance records around, Kayvon draws his inspiration from the 80’s and he’s working on a dance record now. “They don’t have any artists as edgy as me so I guess I’ll be the most controversial artist that they’ve had. What’s interesting to me is that it’s been awhile since we’ve had a David Bowie or a Prince or a Marilyn Manson. You don’t have any guys that are eccentric or really pushing the envelope as artists. That’s the dream I really want to be the next David Bowie someone who pushes ideas like sexuality, and make people be open.” I checked out the weekly Tuesday night edgy and exciting party and if the people clamoring and begging at the door to get in just like they did in the 80’s is any indication of what’s to come, then Kayvon Zand may just be able to live the dream and fill that void.
