She gave birth to her son David Daniel Otunga Jr. in August 2009 and continues to marvel at the depth of love it has brought to her life, even after miraculously finding the strength to deal with the tragic deaths of her family members..
In a new interview on Parade.com, Jennifer dishes on her wedding plans (her son may sing!), her new role on Smash, the surprises of motherhood and more.
Highlights:
On whether her son is a budding entertainer.
“He’s growing up with a musical background and music is a huge part of our household. It’s a huge way I communicate with him. He didn’t want to go to bed the other day and wanted to sing for me. He tried to grab the mic stand and perform ‘Proud Mary’— not that knew all the words! But he got enough of it and did a good job. He really responds. When I perform, he’ll tell me if he thinks I did good.”

On the surprises of motherhood.
“It made me realize how much my mom loved me and how much patience it takes. I think of the things my mom did for me and so I have to do it for my son. Now that I have a child, I get it. I get the example she set. It’s not always easy but it’s for love. You realize how much you can love and how much you give up for your child as a parent. I’m learning that through him.”

Her wedding plans.
“My son won’t have it any other way: he’ll definitely be a part of it. Maybe he’ll even sing!”
