Grammy Award winner, actress and New York Times best selling poet Jill Scott stars in new movie ‘Get On Up’ opposite Chadwick Boseman, and Viola Davis.
The singer and mother to 5-year-old son, Jett, who plays the Godfather of Soul’s second wife, Deidre “Dee Dee” Jenkins, is beaming with an internal glow of love, confidence and freedom.
Not shy, she tells ESSENCE that she is head-over-heels in love, but would rather keep the details about her private life to herself.
“My only job is to be happy,” she says. “So for everybody that cares about me and is not trying to be all up in a celebrity’s business, just know that I’m happy. My son is happy. We enjoy our lives.”
When the singer is not busy with her “two men,” she is keeping busy in the studio working on her as-of-yet untitled fifth album, although she warns fans that it may be some time before they get new music. “I’m a wood-burning stove,” says Scott. “It’s a slow brew.”
For more on Scott’s 63-pound weight loss journey, finding clothes that fit her curves—”if you really enjoy fashion…then you have to be versatile”—as well as her love for wigmaker Andrea “the Dreamweaver” Burrough’s “hair hats,” pick up the September issue of ESSENCE.
