The 74th Annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner at the New York Hilton Midtown had one of the funniest men around, actor and comedian Martin Short serving as the Master of Ceremonies.
Each year the annual fundraising dinner is organized by the Archdiocese of New York to benefit the city’s poor children by providing grants to a number of charitable organizations.
This year’s dinner hosted by Timothy Cardinal Dolan and comedian Martin Short raised over $5.2 million, for needy children across the city, the largest amount in the event’s history for a nonelection year.
The keynote speaker, retired Army general and former Secretary of Defense James Mattis, had one line about President Trump calling him “overrated.”
“He also called Meryl Streep an overrated actress. So I guess I’m the Meryl Streep of generals, and frankly that sounds pretty good to me,” Mattis joked.R
