After almost four decades, Blondie’s Debbie Harry is still rocking. The legendary rocker, 66, recently chatted with Parade.com about Blondie’s new album, her sex symbol status, Lady Gaga interviewing her for Harper’s Bazaar and more. Here are some highlights:
On the secret to lasting success…
“The core of it is the music. I love performing and writing lyrics and being in a band. Being part of an ensemble has always been a preference of mine. I never really envisioned myself as a solo artist, although I have done solo work. But I really enjoy working with Chris and I enjoy working with the other guys in the band. It’s a comfort zone for me.”
On her sex symbol status…
“It’s always been sort of helpful. It’s a showbiz thing. Most performers and artists count on a strong visual. I think that maybe early on, the contribution that I made to the music or the lyrics was probably overlooked a little bit because of my looks, but I don’t think that’s the case now. Since there are so many more women and girls in music these days, it’s become a different kind of analysis — although being sexy and hot never hurts!”
On being interviewed by Lady Gaga in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar…
“That was great. I really enjoyed talking with her. She’s terrific and very insightful and talented. There’s a certain quality about her. She doesn’t come on like she’s the biggest thing in the world — which she is right now. She was great to talk to. I think we had a lot in common.”
