Check out a panel discussion and launch event to celebrate the publication of Daniel Kane’s “Do You have a Band?”: Poetry and Punk Rock in New York City, with Gillian McCain (co-author, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk) and Marvin Taylor (Head of Special Collections & Fales Library).
Thursday, September 7, at 7PM at New York University – Fales Library & Special Collections at 70 Washington Square South, 3rd floor, New York
In the book, Kane reveals how the new sounds of proto-punk and punk music found their way into the poetry of the 1960s and 1970s downtown scene, enabling writers to develop fresh ideas for their own poetics and performance styles. Likewise, groups like The Fugs and the Velvet Underground drew on writers as varied as William Blake and Delmore Schwartz for their lyrics.

Midway through the night, Rabbi Berel Lerman took the floor to introduce Jared Epstein and his wife Mindy stating, “Whenever communities are faced with challenges and whenever in life we are faced with challenges, Hashem always sends the right messenger to help not only solve the problem but make things greater than before. I want to recognize Jared and Mindy in being those messengers.”
Jared Epstein then addressed the guests, “This isn’t about me, there is no I in team, but there is an I in community, in Judaism, in Jewish, in building, in being driven, and I’m driven for three reasons. That is my family, my friends and my community, my Judaism.” He continued, “With all the anti-Semitism going on a couple of months ago, I don’t think a lot of us felt comfortable and it’s so important that we continue to support organizations that are here for us.” Epstein also asked for a moment of silence in honor of Maria and Ken’s daughter Melissa Fishel.

From the serious ‘Alpha Dog’ to the award winning ‘The Social Network‘ and now the comedic ‘Friends with Benefits’, Timberlake has shown he can surely hold his own with the Hollywood community and he’s just as engaging on the big screen as he is on the big stage.
