That’s superstar Oscar winner Nicole Kidman talking to Town & Country on her pattern of picking projects. “I call myself the wild card because I have no idea what it is. I’m so spontaneous—sometimes to my detriment and sometimes my benefit—but it’s how I’ve always been. My husband [Keith Urban] never knows what I’m going to choose. And then he’ll ask me to explain why and I can’t!”
Known for playing it close to the vest, but with a risky new film she steps away from her quiet life in Nashville to bare more than ever before in her most complicated role yet: Mother.
In the December/January issue of Town & Country, on newsstands November 15, Nicole wearing Dior Haute Couture and Tiffany & Co. jewelry, opens up on her personal connection to her new film LION as a mother of adopted children, life with hubby Keith Urban, her daring, spontaneous nature, and more.
On her personal connection to her new film Lion: “I can see now, for Lion, that it was important to me because I’m a mother with adopted children. This movie is a love letter to my children. [My character] Sue is deeply maternal and full of unconditional love, which is beautiful. That’s why I wanted to do it. I relate to that. I feel that for my own children who are adopted. It’s not about anything else other than ‘I wanted you.’ It’s that deep and personal, and whatever your journey is, I’m here to love and support you. That’s what I connected to.”
On her desire to be thrilled, both in projects and in life: “The mistakes I’ve made have always involved people not matching the extreme artistic desire—when I’ve tried to be a bit more homogenized, or tried not to be as bold. When I’ve been guided into places that don’t suit what I am intrinsically—that’s when it doesn’t work out…I’ve been the same way since I was 14. I don’t conform. That’s just my nature.”
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will host its first-ever gala fundraiser, the inaugural Global Goals Gala: A Night for Change, at Phillips, 450 Park Avenue in Manhattan, on Monday, December 5.
UNDP Goodwill Ambassadors His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway, and actors Connie Britton and Michelle Yeoh are on the host committee and scheduled to attend as well as other influencers who will help highlight UNDP’s work around the globe.
The evening will introduce honorees and appoint a new UNDP Goodwill Ambassador, a high-profile actor/activist whose identity will be kept under wraps until shortly before the event.
“The United Nations Development Programme has spent the last five decades fighting poverty and protecting our planet,” said Michael O’Neill, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Director of External Relations. “But we can’t get the job done without our influential supporters and advocates by our side, which is why we are delighted and proud to add another powerful voice to the cause when we appoint a new Goodwill Ambassador on December 5.”
The gala will be interactive, giving guests the unique opportunity to experience what UNDP does to improve people’s lives around the globe, and a surprise musical performance by a major recording artist to be announced will culminate the amazing evening.

Stewart said he didn’t think Trump would be able to recover from the Access Hollywood tape where he was caught making crude remarks about women, but instead the race seems to be tightening. “What is happening?” he said. “I thought we were done three weeks ago.”
