Oprah and her Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) held a private New York screening of its new original drama series, “Queen Sugar,” from award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay and executive producer Oprah Winfrey at the Crosby Street Hotel.
Following the screening, there was a Q&A with DuVernay and attending cast members Rutina Wesley (“Nova Bordelon”), Dawn-Lyen Gardner (“Charley Bordelon West”), Kofi Siriboe (“Ralph Angel Bordelon”), and Nicholas L. Ashe (“Micah West”).
Award-winning DuVernay who brought us the incredible “Selma”, directed the first two episodes, and all episodes in the series’ debut season are directed by women.
“Queen Sugar” based on the book by Natalie Baszile, chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings in Saint Josephine, Louisiana.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation’s annual gala had some big names entertaining the crowd at Water Mill’s Parrish Art Museum last weekend.
Billy Idol (pictured), Diane Reeves and vocal group The Company Men entertained this year’s gala in support of The 12th Annual Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament. Also taking the stage with a special performance was Dr. Francis Collins, Director of National Institute of Heath.
One hundred percent of the funds raised throughout the evening went to supporting groundbreaking discoveries in cancer research.
The foundation’s founder Michael Milken talked about how far PCF has come since its founding, how much of difference the foundation’s work does, and its aim one day to make prostate cancer an illness to “find in the history books.”
The event’s Challenge Research Award raised over $3.5 million in support of the foundation’s work.
