“John & Chrissy Have Too Many Beverly Hills Homes”
After settling in their new Beverly Hills home last summer, John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have not yet sold their other Beverly Hills home – the one they bought from Rihanna in 2016. It is a contemporary-style home where they lived when their two children were born, the home often seen on Chrissy’s social media posts. “Wayne Gretzky Scores Again – Sells Same Home Twice”
Wayne Gretzky recently sold his Thousand Oaks home for the second time. Wayne and his wife, Janet, sold the home to former baseball-star-turned-financial-advisor Lenny Dykstra in 2007, who trashed it after filing bankruptcy. The Gretzkys repurchased it in 2018 for $13.5 million and just sold the home again for $17.6 million.

“Adele Grabs Next-Door-Neighbor Nicole Richie’s Home”
Adele has purchased Nicole Richie’s Beverly Hills home for $10 million. Nicole’s home is located next door to Adele’s current house.  Adele will now own her 6,600-square-foot home, Nicole’s 5,515-square-foot home, and a 6,000-square-foot home across the street where her ex-husband lives.

Kevin Hart Shows Deep Gratitude to Friend/Personal Trainer with Dramatic Reno on HGTV’s ‘Celebrity IOU’

In a new episode of the hit HGTV series Celebrity IOU, airing on Monday, July 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT, comedian, actor and producer Kevin Hart—who has won a BET Award, NAACP Image Awards and People’s Choice Awards and been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award—will express his deep gratitude to his close friend and personal trainer Ron, aka “Boss.” Kevin will combine forces with real estate and renovation experts Drew and Jonathan Scott to transform a crumbling backhouse on Boss’ property into a retreat for the friend who helped him learn how to walk again after a serious car accident.

In a nod to how he met Boss, Kevin will even help design a custom barber shop for the new space. In addition to airing on HGTV, Kevin’s episode of Celebrity IOU will be available to stream on discovery+ early on Monday, July 5. “My life got flipped upside down by a tragic accident, and I had to kind of start over,” said Kevin. “It’s good when you have somebody to do it with you and walk you through it. And Boss was there with me every step of the way.”

During the episode, Kevin will help the Scott Brothers knock down the old kitchen and tear up the rotted floors of the backhouse. Kevin’s smart design decisions will help create a space reflective of Boss’ style, including a modern kitchen with a hidden bar and large stone island and an open living area for entertaining with expansive sliding doors to the back yard. “This is a small token of my appreciation that Boss won’t see coming and that will hopefully floor him,” said Kevin. “This renovation is well deserved because of the person that he is.”

The new Southampton African American Museum (SAAM) held a VIP reception and ribbon cutting to celebrate their historic opening. After sixteen years of planning, the transformed barbershop to Museum opened its doors for a community cultural experience highlighting incredible journeys of black people along unchartered paths from Virginia and the Carolinas north to Southampton, NY. Prior to the event, philanthropist, donor and volunteer fundraiser for the museum, Jean Shafiroff, donated $10,000 and raised another $20,000. The funds Jean helped secure is more than a third of their budget of $85,000 to run the museum on an annual basis. During her speech at the grand opening, she encouraged people to open their wallets and their hearts to contribute to the fundraising efforts which they graciously did.

Longhouse Reserve East Hampton, NY

On view June 26 – September 5, in the LongHouse Pavilion, Jack, Larger Than Life, is an intimate portrait of creator-collector Jack Lenor Larsen (1927–2020). His innovative textiles are presented side by side with his various “enthusiasms,” the objects of craft and art he assiduously gathered, as well as the clothing he collected and wore.  Over 100 objects from the several thousand in LongHouse Reserve’s collection are juxtaposed with Jack’s pronouncements and videotapes of his interviews.

My acquisitions seemed to reinforce my own personal identity…

In collecting I found a quiet means of sharing enthusiasms

—Jack Lenor Larsen

In a period of increasing automation, Jack Lenor Larsen reintroduced handweaving techniques to the textile industry.  Established in the 1950’s, his eponymous brand presented a series of innovations, making Larsen one of the most prolific and respected American designers of his time. A proponent of craft before it was trendy, Larsen’s appetite for the handmade took him across the globe seeking both traditional techniques and modern interpretations. Jack had an insatiable hunger and curiosity for other cultures. Said Kate Irwin, Curator of Costume and Textiles at the RISD Museum, “From the beginning of his career to his last collection for Cowtan & Tout in 2019, Jack’s approach to textile design was innovative and technical, while steeped in hand-craftsmanship and global practices of making. Many of his early designs combined natural fibers with synthetic materials of varying textures, transforming age-old textile techniques into contemporary designs that softened the transparent glass and dense steel of modernist International Style buildings.”

Don’t be reverent. Be relevant. Keep on changing.

—Jack Lenor Larsen

In the Heights Director Jon M. Chu talks the importance of depicting cultural and racial identity through film

in the heights director, new york gossip gal,jon m chu,lin miranda

In the Heights director Jon M. Chu sat down with Town & Country to discuss his journey as a filmmaker, the importance of depicting cultural and racial identity through film, and how In the Heights got its start. Please see below for highlights from the interview.

On why he previously has shied away from discussing cultural and racial identity: “The two things I’m most scared to talk about are growing up in an immigrant community and having that conflict [how do I] move forward. Our parents came with these bags—what do we take forward in our bags now? What are we putting in there and what do we kick the tires on? … The thing that frightened me the most was my cultural identity crisis, the stuff I never wanted to talk about. I had done one short film in college called Gwai Lo: The Little Foreigner, [because] ‘the white devil’ is what they called me when I went to Hong Kong for the first time. It got a great reception, but I was so embarrassed by it. I was so self-conscious that I never put it into festivals. For 10 years, I was like, ‘I’m not going to be the Asian-American director. I’m going to be the director. I don’t want to talk about it, I don’t want think about it. I’m just going to blend.’ And it worked for me.”

On the similarities Chu saw between his upbringing and community in In the Heights: “I grew up not in Washington Heights, and I’m not Latino, obviously, but in a Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area, so I knew what it felt like to have your aunties and uncles take care of you,” he says. “I knew what it felt like to have [my grandmother] teach us how to fold wontons and do the books for the restaurant every night on her abacus. I remember the sound and these little details of smell, sight, and music, that were always around me. The show said everything that I could never say about what it felt like to grow up like that.”

On his vision for transforming In the Heights from Broadway to the big screen: “It didn’t hit me until when I read it that time. I was, at that moment, trying to figure out who I was as a filmmaker. I’d done all these movies, but what was I trying to say? When I read In the Heights again, I felt that same feeling as when I saw it on Broadway. I was like, this is what I’m looking for in terms of telling a unique story of a first-generation person in America. That’s an all-American story. That is who I am, and this is what I should be doing.”

On how In the Heights first got its start with the now disgraced Harvey Weinstein: “Harvey called Christmas Eve and was like, ‘Get back to the Peninsula, 7 AM tomorrow,’ I said, ‘I’m in San Francisco. My family has this big…’ and he said, ‘You have to come. It’ll be a good story.’ So, I left, got there in the morning, had breakfast with him on the roof, and the first thing he said to me was, ‘How’s Star Trek going?’ He thought I was Justin Lin, the other Asian director. That’s how our relationship started.”

Chu pitched Weinstein his idea for In the Heights anyway, proposing a movie about what he calls “a neighborhood that you may pass through and never think twice about but made the center of a big musical that shows dreams bigger than any musical we’ve seen before.” It didn’t go over so well. “I pitched him the whole thing, and he was like, ‘I love it. Except for the dreams part,’” Chu says. “‘People don’t want to see movies that don’t take you somewhere else. They have to be transported to a mansion; they have to be transported to a golf course.’ I was like, ‘Oh, well, that’s my whole pitch.’”

Reflecting on the beauty in the message of In the Heights: “It has hit me that all the times I was in my bedroom, dreaming about being a filmmaker, dreaming about not being in the restaurant business, watching TV, imagining myself somewhere in Hollywood, that I was actually in Hollywood. I love the idea of a neighborhood that dreams big with hopes and aspirations were bigger than its walls. We wouldn’t take these characters to a mansion to dream about what it would feel like to be rich, it would be all in Washington Heights. That’s the way you dream when that’s all you know, because that’s the way I dreamed.”
