At 32, Robyn Rihanna Fenty is already an icon. But the secret to her success in the beauty business and now skin might lie in how she has reimagined what it means to be one.

QUOTES

Rihanna on her brand vision for Fenty and the difficulties of “getting it right”: “I’ve always seen the Fenty brand as more than just makeup, and I knew I wanted to make skin care from the very beginning. It was just about getting it right. You have to live with the formulas for a while and test them in different ways. It’s very different from makeup in that sense. It takes a long time.”

On her mother’s influence: “She knew everything about perfume, skin care and makeup. She never let me wear makeup, but I was secretly fascinated. So, when she’d leave home, I would play around with hers.”

Actress Tracee Ellis Ross on Rihanna’s mission to make beauty more inclusive: “Rihanna’s unapologetic determination to make beauty an inclusive industry – and her insistence that beauty can be democratic – changed the game. She seems to imagine from a world where there are no limits, inviting us all to do the same.”

On finding trainer Nic Shimonek (also trainer to Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes) on Instagram:

“The universe, I trust it. If it leads me to click on somebody’s name, there has to be a reason.”

On frequently performing on-stage longer than his contracts mandate:

On working out to accent his back tattoo:

Kerry Washington talks social justice, civil liberties in ‘The Fight’

kerry washington, town& country, new york gossip gal
Credit: AD + DM

Kerry Washington is the cover star of Town & Country’s September 2020 Issue (on newsstands August 12).

Washington comes to T&C to discuss her latest film, The Fight, a documentary she produced which provides rare access to the work and lives of a group of lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

The film traces four of the main legal battles surrounding recent administration policies—immigration and border control, transgender military policies, census cases, and reproductive rights—led by five ACLU lawyers: Brigitte Amiri, Joshua Block, Lee Gelernt, Dale Ho, and Chase Strangio.

In her cover story, Kerry opens up about what The Fight means to her, why she considers the ACLU lawyers to be superheroes, and how we can all get involved for the fight for social justice. The Fight is available now on all streaming platforms.

QUOTES

Kerry Washington on what The Fight means to her: “I have such deep reverence for what this country can be. I love that this film invites us all into the ‘we’ and to know that we belong here. We have to fight to belong here, but we belong here.”

Kerry Washington on why she considers the ACLU lawyers in The Fight to be superheroes: “At [my production company] Simpson Street, we really believe that heroes look like all of us. These lawyers are real life superheroes. What I think they each do so beautifully in the film is show us that while they are taking on the greatest challenges to our civil rights in our lives, they are also just people.”

Kerry Washington on how we each get involved in the fight for social justice: “This is such a great moment, because we are in an unprecedented time when people of extraordinary privilege, for lots of reasons, are asking themselves how they can be part of the solution. Whether it is to give your time, give your money, give your heart, speak up in the conversation when somebody says they don’t believe something.”

The 16th Annual Hamptons Happening Virtual Concert Sat, Aug 8: Benefits Cancer Research & Honors First Responders

hamptons happening

The 16th Annual Hamptons Happening, one of the Hamptons, much-anticipated summer charity events, this year will feature a virtual concert with celebrity appearances. The event will support the groundbreaking research of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) and honor COVID-19 first responders.

The performer lineup includes Sophie Beem, Caly Bevier, and Rufus Wainwright, who return to the Hamptons Happening from prior-year performances. Also performing will be Grammy-Award nominated popstar, Sophie B. HawkinsConstantine Maroulis, the Tony-nominated star of Rock of Ages, and Steven Reineke, musical director and conductor of the New York Pops.

Chris Wragge, anchor of CBS 2 News New York returns as master of ceremonies. The presentation will feature special appearances by celebrities, SWCRF leadership, and the globally-renowned Director of Infectious Disease at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Rajeev Fernando, M.D. who will talk about the challenges providing emergency care to patients diagnosed with the novel coronavirus.

“For its 16th year, the Hamptons Happening event will bring together the metro-New York City and Hamptons communities to support cutting-edge research funded by the SWCRF, although this year, we are gathering in small groups,” said William T. Sullivan, Executive Director of the SWCRF. “To date, the Hamptons Happening has raised more than $5 million for cancer research, and we are tremendously grateful to the community of supporters who participate each year.”

Some supporters will host viewing parties throughout the Hamptons area while observing social-distancing guidelines. Viewing parties receive gourmet boxed dinners by celebrity chef Peter Ambrose and wine and cocktail baskets by Out East Rose and Simple Vodka. Supporters also have the option to receive a catered dinner for two or four or purchase single-viewing tickets without the dinner option.

“The world is battling a global pandemic, but scientists are optimistic that there will be a vaccine to prevent the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Unfortunately, a vaccine for preventing cancer remains elusive, and the disease remains one of the leading causes of death in the United States and globally,” said Samuel Waxman, M.D., SWCRF founder and chief executive officer. “Despite these alarming statistics, our research is making progress in uncovering the causes of cancer and developing targeted and more effective treatments.”

Dua Lipa zooming her way to the top

Elle’s May 2020 cover with Dua Lipa hitting newsstands on April 28, has Dua opening up about her releasing ‘Future Nostalgia’ during COVID-19, quarantine-life with Anwar and predictions for our post pandemic existence: “I think things will definitely change. I think we’ll tread differently with Mother Nature—we won’t be as careless as we have been. I think we’ll be more empathetic and make moments count. We won’t take things for granted. I think our world is probably going to change forever.”

Dua Lipa wants to show me her skylights. They’re not hers, exactly, belonging instead to the owners of the London Airbnb where she’s currently self-quarantining with her boyfriend, model Anwar Hadid. It’s actually the second Airbnb the 24-year-old singer has rented since returning from a trip to Australia to find her flat flooded, but they’re rolling with it. I can hear Hadid’s soft laughter as Lipa tilts her laptop toward the ceiling. It’s been four months since the global COVID-19 pandemic began, three weeks since the U.K. and U.S. mandated that nonessential workers stay home, and 14 days since Lipa released her second album, Future Nostalgia. So naturally, this interview is being conducted via Zoom. The skylights are beautiful.

On releasing her album ‘Future Nostalgia’ during the pandemic: Everything was supposed to culminate with a well-timed media blitz—including a Saturday Night Live appearance on March 28 and the release of this cover story about, well, now. And then a bot alerted her label, Warner Records, that the album had leaked a week early. Before that moment, she too had been weighing a delay. “But I think [the leak] just kind of solidified my choice that I wanted it to be out April 3 anyway,” Lipa says. “This is me going into my celestial beliefs, but it was like, Okay, this is just how it’s meant to be. And I am really grateful that the music is out. The way I write my music, I’m always very open, and I allow myself to be vulnerable. And I feel now more than ever that it’s brought me closer to my listeners. I think it’s important to talk about your emotions and to be vulnerable and to show that you’re human.”

On her quarantine life with Anwar Hadid: “Oh my God, I’ve watched so many shows—Ozark, Tiger King, The Night Of, The Outsider, Servant, did I say Ozark? And lots of movies, too.” She and Hadid also recently cooked octopus, an impulse buy from a farm-to-table app. “We were just buying our normal fish and stuff, and octopus came up. So we said, ‘Okay, let’s try something different.’ It’s about making things fun, coming up with different recipes, trying out things that we’ve never done before.”

Which isn’t to say the past several weeks haven’t been hard. “Of course Anwar misses his family, and soon we’ll hopefully get to go back and see them,” she says. Until recently, the couple’s conversations revolved around when they’d be able to see each other in between Lipa’s upcoming tour dates, “but now that we get all this extra time, we’re just making the most of it,” she says. “And that’s been really nice. We’re trying to see the bright side.”

Dua’s predictions for our post pandemic existence: “I think things will definitely change. I think we’ll tread differently with Mother Nature—we won’t be as careless as we have been. I think we’ll be more empathetic and make moments count. We won’t take things for granted. I think our world is probably going to change forever.”

On how this time might impact her next album: “I don’t feel like we’ll want to be reminded too much of this time. Of course, this is a major moment in history that we won’t forget. But I don’t know whether that’s going to influence where my music is going to go next.”P

Prince Charles tested positive for coronavirus last week. The Duke of Cornwall took to Instagram to provide fans with an update on his health.

Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla had traveled to the royal family’s Balmoral estate in Scotland, before the heir to the British throne began displaying mild symptoms. The couple was subsequently tested by the NHS, with Prince Charles testing positive. Duchess Camilla, whose test results were negative, is self-isolating in a separate wing of the Birkhall residence on the Balmoral estate.

The Clarence House Instagram account shared an update regarding the prince’s health. The caption read, “Thank you for all your ‘Get Well Soon’ messages for His Royal Highness. He is enormously touched by your kind words.”

A palace source previously told BAZAAR.com that Charles remains in “good spirits,” and continues to keep busy with work while in quarantine. The source also revealed, per BAZAAR.com’s Royal Editor at Large, Omid Scobie, that Charles “is said to be overwhelmed at the support he has received from well-wishers who have already sent hundreds of get well soon cards and digital messages.”
