The Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) will be hosting their Annual Week of Hope and Race of Hope to Defeat Depression in Palm Beach from February 4 – 15. This year, HDRF will light up Palm Beach’s iconic Royal Park Bridge sunshine yellow on Tuesday, February 4 to kick off the week.

DRF’s Race of Hope, the centerpiece of the campaign, is a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 15 at 8 am at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. HDRF Founding Chair Audrey Gruss and Board member Scott Snyder, both Palm Beach residents, are Grand Marshals for the annual event which is now in its second year. With hundreds registered from Palm Beach and beyond, the Race unites the community in an active day of health to speak out about depression and raise funds for critical research.

“Depression is the Number One cause of suicide and disability worldwide,” said Audrey Gruss, “and our vow in the next decade is to find new treatments that will finally bring this complex illness under control.”  Gruss added: “The support we receive in Palm Beach for the work we do affirms our commitment to defeating this debilitating illness that affects each and every one of us, either directly or indirectly.

Week of Hope

Just after the bridge lighting and in the run-up to the Race, The Royal Poinciana Plaza will kick off the Week of Hope on Wednesday, February 5. Many storefronts at The Royal Poinciana Plaza will place a two-foot-wide, environmentally friendly and re-usable, yellow statement balloon at their front doors and hand out informational flyers about depression.

Over in the Worth Avenue shopping district, other stores along Via Bice will also display balloons and support HDRF’s mission with a percentage of sales during a Day of Hope on Wednesday, February 12.

“The bridge and the bright balloons represent a commitment to change the staggering statistics around depression,” said Audrey Gruss.

“The Royal Poinciana Plaza is thrilled to participate in this event for the second year in a row,” added Alexandra Patterson, Senior Director of Development and Interim General Manager of The Royal Poinciana Plaza. “The HOPE yellow balloons make a visual impact that will spark thousands of life-saving conversations and we are grateful to have the opportunity to support  such an important cause.”

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the country’s leading non-profit organization dedicated solely to fighting depression through research and education. Now in its 14th year, HDRF launched the Race of Hope in Palm Beach in 2019, expanding the event from Southampton, NY, where the Race first started in 2016.

Last year the Race of Hope in Palm Beach raised over $300,000 for life-saving research.

Gallerist Isabelle Bscher and famed curator Jerome Neutres teamed up with chef Daniel Boulud for an exclusive one-night-only pop-up of the exhibition of “What’s for Dinner” at Galerie Gmurzynska in New York.

Esteemed guests joined Daniel Boulud and Jerome Neutres as they were led on a roving talk of the artwork featured in the gallery, which included works by Roy Lichtenstein, Pablo Picasso, and Joao Miro amongst others. The exhibition was co-curated by Isabelle Bscher and gallery director, Mathias Rastorfer. Chef Daniel entertained guests as he shared stories of when he first moved to New York in 1982, he could not afford to buy art but would instead feed the artists on the Upper East Side. The walls of Bar Boulud, one of Daniel’s 10 NYC restaurants are famously lined with French vintage wine stains nodding to the chef’s playful personality. While quoting French philosopher, Brillant Savarin, Daniel paraphrased the famous quote, switching food for art, “tell me what you like, and I will tell you who you are.”

Notable guests included artists Will Cotton and Anne Dong, Grace Hightower, CeCe Cord, designer Nicole Miller, Muffie Potter Ashton, skincare mogul Peter Thomas Roth, Lillian Cavendish, Leon Black, Libbie Mugrabi, Lucas Bscher, Diandra Douglas, Janna Bullock, financier Dan Loeb, Michael Musto, Izzy Englander, Krystyna Gmurzynska, Christine Vachon, Dmitri Mavromatis, collectors Prosper and Martine Assouline, author Daniel Kehlmann, and French Ambassador to UN, Nicolas de Riviere.

The evening was followed by an elegant dinner at Bar Pleidas, prepared by Chef Boulud’s, at his UES cocktail lounge at The Surrey Hotel which was closed for the occasion. The esteemed culinary icon created dishes inspired by the exhibition including caviar, foie gras, steak tartare, seafood towers, and charcuterie, which spans the 20th century and its movements, a unique journey through the artistic languages that have characterized the relationship between art and food.

Behind the Scenes With HGTV’s Erin & Ben Napier Helping Rebuild Laurel, Miss

Laura Good/Discovery Inc

HGTV lovers know that Erin and Ben Napier, who met in college in Ellisville, Miss., and got married soon after they both graduated, are helping rebuild their Laurel, Miss., hometown one house at a time. And they’re doing it on TV.

In the most recent issue of Parade, the entrepreneurs told how their business—and family—have both grown since they began hosting the fan-favorite HGTV series (now entering its fourth season). And, big news!, they’ll soon move on to help another small town in a Home Town spinoff.

Expanding empire. Laurel has become a tourist destination since it’s been featured on their show, which follows the Napiers as they turn dilapidated old houses into dream digs. Visitors to Laurel can look for some of the 30-plus houses Erin and Ben have renovated on the show, as well as their own 1925 Craftsman. And they can watch Ben at work in his woodshop or shop at the couple’s businesses, including a general store and a housewares boutique.

Building a family. Business is booming, but the couple remains humble and devoted to each other. Ben’s a 6-foot-6 bear of man who towers over pixieish 5-foot-5 Erin. They finish each other’s sentences. She calls him “Big” and gazes at him lovingly while he speaks. He hugs her a lot. They have a 2-year-old daughter, Helen, who’s the center of their world. They plan their daily schedules around her naps, meals and bedtime, and won’t go out of town for more than two nights unless Helen can go along with them. “Helen’s number one and everything else has to fall in line behind her,” Erin says.

Keeping prices down. Always dollar-conscious, the Napiers try to keep expenses on the show under $200,000, including the original house sale price and the cost of renovation work. That’s the beauty of living in a state where the cost of living’s low. “I mean, if you make $100,000 a year in Mississippi, you are living large,” Erin says. “We give people the very best historic restoration and preservation we can with the budget that they have. ‘Scrappy, not crappy’ is the motto around here.”

Ben’s geek-out: “Wood grain!”

Erin’s design must-have: “Spend money on bigger baseboards. You need bigger baseboards than you think you do. Big baseboards are sexy.”

On starring in, producing, and occasionally directing Netflix’s VWars, a medical thrilled involving a vampiric uprising:

The actress and producer takes us inside her day of 3 million unread e-mails, 2 breakfasts, and 1 unfinished memoir. This article is included in the February issue of Harper’s BAZAAR, on newsstands January 21st.

Quotes

“The first thing I do in the morning is put on music. My life has always been pretty musical, and now with Nick it’s completely musical. I decided to date him after seeing the video for “Close,” where his shirt comes off. So that song is my favorite.”

“We have a Nespresso machine, so I make espresso. That’s what I call my ‘first breakfast.’ Then, when I’m in New York, my assistant comes by with my ‘second breakfast,’ a Sweetgreen bowl—scrambled eggs, veggies, and farrow. And then … I mean, I should work out. I have every intention to. But every day it’s like, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow, I’ll do it tomorrow.” And then tomorrow never comes. It’s the Samuel Beckett version of working out.’

“I had a Google alert on my name when it first started, but it got to be way too much. Now it’s only if I have a movie coming out or I need to know what’s the chatter. But I don’t Google myself, and I don’t Google Nick. There’s so much information about us—it’s overwhelming.”

“I’m meant to be writing a book. It’s called Unfinished, but it’s also literally unfinished because my life’s been so crazy. It takes a lot of introspection on my part because it’s a memoir of my last 20 years in entertainment, so I like to sit on my couch or lie down on my bed with a journal or a piece of paper. I need a pen and paper to think.”

“I hate watching movies I’m in; all I see are the faults. But I’m happy to watch Nick’s. I’ve never seen Camp Rock, and everyone makes fun of me about that, so maybe soon we’ll have a Camp Rock viewing party. I bet it will be great.”

“Nick and I didn’t really know that much about each other’s careers before we came into each other’s lives. So we used to do a show-and-tell at night where it would be like, ‘This is my first song!’ or ‘This is my first movie!’ or ‘This is the first song I wrote myself,’ things like that. And actually that’s how we’re still getting to know each other.”
