The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation’s 13th Annual Unconditional Love Gala returned to the Hamptons on a beautiful summer evening on storied Gin Lane in Southampton, NY. The grand soiree was among the highlight of this summer season out East to date. Chaired by Jean Shafiroff, the event honored Jonathan McCann, founding President of SASF and William Bratton, former Police Commissioner of New York City.  The Honorary Chair was Georgina Bloomberg.  The annual event has been the most important fundraiser for the shelter for over a decade featuring a reception, seated dinner and dancing. In addition, a live and silent auction helped raise much-needed funds for the animals.

Proceeds from this event directly supported the more than 5,000 animals who enter the SASF’s doors each year. The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, open admission, no kill organization, is supported exclusively by donations and grants from the community. From caring and finding homes for stray and abandoned animals to providing low-cost veterinary care and dog training so that animals can remain in their homes, the shelter has become a vital resource in our community. Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) will host its first annual National Virtual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression on Saturday, May 14th in honor of Mental Health Awareness month, raising awareness and funds for depression research.

The National Virtual Race is a spin-off of the winter Race of Hope in Palm Beach and the summer Race of Hope in Southampton, which have raised roughly $2 million for research since their inception.

The stand-alone virtual race allows registered participants to walk or run in their hometowns, and choose their race distance: 5k, 10k, 15k, Half Marathon, or Marathon. For those who want to complete their distance at the same time as other racers across the U.S., HDRF will host an hour-long broadcast, to be live-streamed on Facebook starting at 8:15 AM EST on May 14th. The goal of the broadcast is to create a sense of community even though the race is virtual, and racers can post photos and comments on the live stream page.

The broadcast will also feature an open discussion about depression and treatment, including:

  • An interview with the Chief Medical Officer of Talkspace, Dr. Varun Choudhary.  Talkspace is a leading virtual behavioral healthcare provider based in New York City.
  • An interview with world-renowned neuroscientist Dr. Eric Nestler, Chair of HDRF’s Depression Task Force.  Dr. Nestler will give an update on research progress into new, precision treatments for depression.
  • Racers will dedicate their miles to someone who has been affected by depression, prompting open and honest discussion on the forum.

The cost to register is $45 and the first 500 to sign up will receive a race jacket, hat, bottle, bib, and a huge finisher medal. 100% of the funds raised will go directly to depression research. For more information or to register, visit: Virtual.RaceOfHopeSeries.com

Adam Levine New Owner of Rob Lowe’s Montecito Home

Adam Levine just paid $52 million for Rob Lowe’s former home. The Lowe/Levine Montecito mansion is featured this week at TopTenRealEstateDeals.com.

Maroon 5 leader, Adam Levine, doesn’t have to sing for his dinner, though he still often does. In addition to his lucrative singing career, he has accumulated millions in real estate profits and does that often too. Married to South African supermodel, Behati Prinsloo, in 2014 and now with two children, the couple continues on their whirlwind buy-and-flip homes projects and have just purchased the former Rob Lowe Montecito house on its sprawling 3.5 acres for $52 million.

Toptenrealestatedeals.com

After Rob and his wife, Sheryl Berkoff, sold their longtime family home to healthcare executive Jack McGinley in 2020 for $44.5 million, McGinley has just sold the home to Levine and Prinsloo for a nice $7.5 million profit – in just two years. While it is likely that McGinley made some changes to the home, Levine and Prinsloo bought the house as an unadvertised pocket listing, so there is no way of knowing what changes were made during their tenure. However, knowing the frequent sales and huge profits Adam has made on his home sales (at least seven homes since 2012), there is no doubt that Adam and Behati have a plan in mind, which we will likely see in Architectural Digest in a year or two.

Toptenrealestatedeals.com

The 10,000-square-foot Georgian Colonial-style home was built in 2009 and designed by architect Don Nulty to resemble Lowe’s Charlottesville, Virginia birthplace. The decor is a bright-white interior filled with California sunshine and Pacific Ocean views. The home has six bedrooms, eleven baths, large open formal rooms, a huge white-and-cheerful family kitchen, separate catering kitchen, wine room, multiple living-and-dining areas, professional theater, and an expansive master suite. Additional details like vaulted ceilings, handmade crown moldings, custom millwork, and view-framing windows add architectural charm. Also included is an office, library-music room with bar, and a family room. There are nine indoor fireplaces throughout the house with one in the master suite. Outside is a full outdoor living room with a wood-burning fireplace, koi pond, large swimming pool, a tennis court with viewing area and rolling lawns and gardens large enough for team sports with mature oak trees and a vegetable garden. Also on the grounds are a swimming pool and spa, a two-bedroom guest house, a one-bedroom pool house with staff quarters, and an outdoor kitchen.

Prinsloo came to fame as a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2009 and often opened their fashion shows on the runway. She also appeared in Maroon 5’s 2018 music video Girls Like You with her husband, their oldest daughter, and two dozen additional female celebrities. Adam and Behati’s most recent business venture is a tequila company, Calirosa, which went on the market last year. Levine, as frontman for Maroon 5, has pulled in numerous awards: three Grammys, three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and a World Music Award. He has taken a break from almost 10 years of work as a coach on The Voice.

How Serena Williams Saved Her Own Life

ALLYSSA HEUZE/TRUNK ARCHIVE

Black women are nearly three times more likely to die after childbirth than white women. Serena Williams was almost one of them. Here, in her own words, she tells her story in an exclusive adaption from Arrival Stories: Women Share Their Experiences of Becoming Mothers, an anthology collected by Amy Schumer and Christy Turlington Burns, out now.

Serena and her daughter, Olympia.
COURTESY OF SERENA WILLIAMS

On how the stakes of the game have changed for her since having her daughter Olympia: “I have 23 Grand Slams to my name, more than any other active player. But winning is now a desire and no longer a need. I have a beautiful daughter at home; I still want the titles, the success, and the esteem, but it’s not my reason for waking up in the morning. There is more to teach her about this game than winning. I’ve learned to dust myself off after defeat, to stand up for what matters at any cost, to call out for what’s fair—even when it makes me unpopular. Giving birth to my baby, it turned out, was a test for how loud and how often I would have to call out before I was finally heard.”

On her delivery experience and knowing when to surrender: “Outside my birthing room, there were meetings going on without me—my husband was conferencing with the doctors. By this point, I was more than ready for the epidural, but after 20 minutes, the doctor walked in, looked at me, and said, “We’re giving you a C-section.” She made it clear that there wasn’t time for an epidural or more pushing. I loved her confidence; had she given me the choice between more pushing or surgery, I would have been ruined. I’m not good at making decisions. In that moment, what I needed most was that calm, affirmative direction. Since it was my first child, I really wanted to have the baby vaginally, but I thought to myself, “I’ve had so many surgeries, what’s another one?” Being an athlete is so often about controlling your body, wielding its power, but it’s also about knowing when to surrender. I was happy and relieved to let go; the energy in the room totally changed. We went from this intense, seemingly endless process to a clear plan for bringing this baby into the world.”

On her post birth experience and fighting to be heard when it came to her healthcare: “So much of what happened after that is still a blur. I may have passed out a few times. In my haze, I wondered if I should ask someone about my drip. In 2010, I learned I had blood clots in my lungs—clots that, had they not been caught in time, could have killed me. Ever since then, I’ve lived in fear of them returning. It wasn’t a one-off; I’m at high risk for blood clots. I asked a nurse, “When do I start my heparin drip? Shouldn’t I be on that now?”

“The response was, “Well, we don’t really know if that’s what you need to be on right now.” No one was really listening to what I was saying. The logic for not starting the blood thinners was that it could cause my C-section wound to bleed, which is true. Still, I felt it was important and kept pressing. All the while, I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t move at all—not my legs, not my back, nothing.”

“I began to cough. The nurses warned me that coughing might burst my stitches, but I couldn’t help it. The coughs became racking, full-body ordeals. Every time I coughed, sharp pains shot through my wound.”

They were trying to talk to me, and all I could think was, “I’m dying, I’m dying. Oh my God.”

On finally finding blood clots in her lungs after advocating repeatedly for herself after multiple surgeries: “In the other room, I spoke to the nurse. I told her: “I need to have a CAT scan of my lungs bilaterally, and then I need to be on my heparin drip.” She said, “I think all this medicine is making you talk crazy.” I said, “No, I’m telling you what I need: I need the scan immediately. And I need it to be done with dye.” I guess I said the name of the dye wrong, and she told me I just needed to rest. But I persisted: “I’m telling you, this is what I need.” Finally, the nurse called my doctor, and she listened to me and insisted we check. I fought hard, and I ended up getting the CAT scan. I’m so grateful to her. Lo and behold, I had a blot clot in my lungs, and they needed to insert a filter into my veins to break up the clot before it reached my heart.

On how being heard and treated was the difference between life and death for her: “In the U.S., Black women are nearly three times more likely to die during or after childbirth than their white counterparts. Many of these deaths are considered by experts to be preventable. Being heard and appropriately treated was the difference between life or death for me; I know those statistics would be different if the medical establishment listened to every Black woman’s experience.”

Eric L. AdamsMayor of New York, proclaimed last week, “The Sun is back up in the sky over New York … The Sun is going to play, I believe, a major role in raising the bar and ensuring that we bring back what I feel is integrity…Social media is not a scholarly research assignment. Because it is on a tweet, doesn’t mean it happens in the street…I welcome The Sun to shine a bright light on every neighborhood, every community, every story. Scrutinize us where we need to be scrutinized, inspire us to do better to turn around this city, and make sure we end the inequalities, deal with the public safety that we must face, bring back our economy, and let everyone know in spite of how they feel in this small town, this small city, New York is the center of the universe. “ This was at the Carnegie Hall soiree for the relaunch of the famed New York Sun newspaper.

The biggest laughs of the evening however went to The Sun’s new publisher, Dovid Efune, who shared, “About 8 years ago, Leonard Mason Smith, resident of Pine Island Florida, died. Smith was a veteran of WW2 and the Korean War and had a career as a management executive. In an obituary his family wrote, ‘He hated pointless bureaucracy, thoughtless inefficiency, and bad ideas born of good intentions. He loved his wife, admired his children, and liked every dog. He will be greatly missed by those he loved. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you cancel your subscription to The New York Times.’”

Editor in chief Seth Lipsky spoke warmly of his new partnership with Publisher Dovid Efune, whom he’s met regularly with for the last 13 years.

Guests included, Glamour editor in chief Samantha BarryAdam Brodsky, Bloomberg’s Amanda Gordon (herself a Sun alumna), Jojo Anavim, The Wall Street Journal’s Paul Gigot, Sir Clive Gillinson with his wife, Anya Deutsch and her mother, the concert pianist Galina NovikovaThe Washington Post’s Jada Juan, Francine LeFrak and Rick Friedberg, Michael Massing, Betsey McCaughey, Daphne Merkin, Liz and Jeff Peek, Dan Rosen, Amity Shlaes, Ira Stoll, and Ali Wambold.

The New York Sun is now an online daily with national and international coverage aiming to restore public trust in the press. “With its founding as the first penny daily in 1833, and bearing the immortal slogan ‘It Shines for All’ on its masthead, The Sun helped introduce the bounty of journalism to millions of Americans,” said Sun publisher Dovid Efune. “Today, with record public distrust in the press, we’re setting out again to play that familiar role. Our loyalties are with the American people and American values. We are a newspaper for this very moment.”  For more see: https://www.nysun.com

YAGP founder Larissa Saveliev was unable to attend the event as she was not only supervising US regional auditions but also seeking international programs to take talented Ukrainian ballet students. It’s been a Herculean task; contacting schools across Europe, sending airfare and train fair, finding teachers to meet them at the border, clean practice clothes, food, and communicating with families.  So far there are no visa’s available for these students into the US. In Monaco, where there legal statutes prohibit refugees, special dispensation from The Palace has been granted.  The Russian born Saveliev is half Ukrainian herself.
